Leroy Kelly's Offensive Line

Hall of Fame Guard Gene Hickerson leads Leroy Kelly on the famed Browns sweep play

Every great running back gives full credit to his offensive line for making him successful. Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, and Leroy Kelly demonstrated this by pushing Gene Hickerson in a wheelchair at his 2007 Hall of Fame induction ceremony. During the recent Cleveland Browns "Ring of Honor" ceremonies Leroy Kelly said, "I really didn't feel that much pressure, because we had such a great team. The blocking was great -- Hickerson, John Wooten, [Dick] Schafrath, John Brewer, John Morrow ... Paul [Warfield] and Gary [Collins] were receivers, and they blocked, too. [Fullback] Ernie Green blocked. These guys made it easy for me." For three straight years from 1966 to 1968 Leroy Kelly ran for more than 1000 yards in each season. His great offensive lines were the catalyst for his success and helped him to become the Cleveland Browns greatest halfback.

Gene Hickerson - Guard (1958-1960, 62-73)

Gene Hickerson was a six-time Pro Bowl guard who blocked for Hall of Famers Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell, and Leroy Kelly. The Browns picked him in the seventh round of the 1957 draft from the University of Mississppi. He missed the 1961 season with a broken leg but returned for the 1962 season. Beginning with Browns running back Jim Brown in 1963 and Leroy Kelly 1966, Hickerson helped them to rush for more than 1000 yards for six straight seasons. He was the lead blocker on the famed Browns sweep play (see photo above). Gene Hickerson was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.

John Wooten - 6'2" 235 lbs - Guard (1959-1967 Browns)

John Morrow was a two-time Pro Bowl center. The Browns traded center Art Hunter (1956-59 Browns) to the Los Angeles Rams for Morrow. He was a member of the Browns 1964 Championship team and was part of the offensive line that helped Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly to rush for a combined six 1000-yard seasons.

John Brown - 6'2" 248 lbs - Tackle (1962-66 Browns)

He was on the Syracuse offensive line that paved the way for Ernie Davis to break many of Jim Brown's records when he played there. Davis was to join his former college teammate John Brown on the Browns roster for the 1962 season but Davis got sick and died before that could occur. Brown was a member of the Browns 1964 Championship team and was part of the offensive line that helped Jim Brown and Leroy Kelly to rush for a combined four 1000-yard seasons.

Monte Clark - 6'6" 265 lbs - Tackle (1963-69 Browns)

The Browns acquired Monte Clark in a trade with the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the Browns 1964 Championship team and successfully held off Baltimore Colts' Hall of Fame defensive end Gino Marchetti during the Championship game. Clark was the right tackle for all three of Leroy Kelly's 1000-yard seasons.
